Back-links bring in views and add to the ranking of your page. That is what the professional SEO gurus tell you all the time. The principle is right, but how much of your time is it worth investing? There are back-links, and then there are back-links. Some are worth the trouble, some are not. Quality back-links over quantity must be the credo.
Back-links to your article add to its worth for Google Page Rank and just about any search engine. The problem is: A single back-link is worth near to nothing, and ten only very little more. In view of this, chasing and creating back-links by going from page to page to leave tracks is a waste of time.
Placing back-links by your own hand in comment sections just for the fractional impact they have on the ranking of your article is wasting your time. Don’t get sidetracked by placing comments on forums and blogs just to leave the link of your article. That time would be better spent on writing or drinking tea. Putting your feet up and nap would do you more good than those back-links.
Maybe a comparison is in order. Imagine a back-link as a cent. How many cents do you need to collect to pay your annual salary? The problem with back-links is that you don’t need to get enough cents to equal your annual salary to make an impression. You need enough to cover the United States deficit. That's a sobering thought, isn't it?
So far, I have been talking about back-links as back-links without grading them in any way. The back-links that only give the connection from one page to another are one thing. There are back-links that result in real views for your article. They are a different pair of shoes altogether. And some of them come for free, too. Or they are almost free. Everything has a price on it, even if that is nothing more than time you have to invest. Free giveaways don’t exist: that is an illusion you should leave behind when working the net for money.
The easy back-links that result in views to get are Facebook and Twitter if you maintain those pages properly. First, you have to make sure that your profile on both sites conforms to your brand in name and avatar. Then all you have to do is publish your article onto them. That is the easy and free part of the deal. But for your back-links to have an impact on your views, you must have friends and followers on both those sites. They won’t do you any good if you sit there in splendid isolation. And that is where your time is being spent again. You have to build up your networking profiles so that people are seeing what you are publishing. Otherwise you will be in the sound in the forest situation.
There are many other sharing sites you could use. Mix, Reddit, Ping, Instagram, and what not else. They all work. But each of these networks has the disadvantage of you having to spend time on building a following, too. In consequence, they cost you more time than what you already spend on Twitter and Facebook. Some of them will work for you, others won’t. You’ll have to spend some time on finding out what does work for you, and what doesn't. Stop wasting time on anything that doesn't work and use the time to try something else.
