When buying real estate, you hear the mantra 'location, location, location'. When writing anything, you should heed the mantra 'vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary' even more. In its latest incarnation, Amazon Kindle has a vocabulary builder included in the e-readers, and I for one can only recommend it.
I don't really have to mention it that I like my Kindle, I said so repeatedly. But the latest inclusion of a vocabulary builder makes it a valuable tool for anyone in the writing profession or in the process of learning English. Vocabulary is a vital tool of the trade, and expanding and perfecting it is part of the daily routine a serious writer works at.
When reading a book, you can look up any word you aren't familiar with or not entirely sure about its meaning. That isn't new, the very first Kindle was able to do that already. What is new is that you can enter these words into a list to get back to them.
The list allows you to click any of the words you want to memorize and make use of the attached flashcards to check your memory's retentive power. When I went to school, I had to write these cards painfully by hand. Not necessarily a total evil, as writing down what you want to learn is a valid way of memorizing it. But painful all the same. The Kindle does all of the work for you now.
Using the feature can add to your writing prowess in many ways. There is the growth factor where you add new words to your vocabulary; there is the honing factor where you can narrow down the exact meaning of a word and become more concise in the use of language; and there is the stabilizing factor that helps you stay on top of shaky spelling.
If so far you have ignored Kindle as a technical gadget without value, it is time to reconsider your stance. These e-readers are more than just for reading books. With the possibility to upload your own stuff in addition to any relevant books you need, it has always been more than just a space saving library for the go. Now it has become a weapon of choice in your writing enterprise. Go get it if you haven't one already.Further reading
